Teeth whitening

Get ready to unveil new, beautifully brightened pearly whites with Truly Dental’s bespoke Teeth Whitening kits.

For the upcoming special day where you need to flash your sunniest smile; for those moments when you wish you had more motivation to maintain those essential daily oral hygiene habits; or for every day when you’ve felt the urge to take a decisive step towards a new, more confident first impression – professional, custom-made Teeth Whitening treatments can deliver that bright, brilliant smile to transform your every day and perfect your extraordinary days.

Our teeth tend to stain over time, whether from frequent contact with certain foods and drinks (think of tea, coffee, or red wine), as a result of smoking, or as a natural effect of age. The protective enamel coating of our teeth experiences wearing over time, revealing the yellow pigmentation of the inside of the teeth which gets darker as we grow. However this staining has come to build up, darker, yellowing teeth can have a real impact on a person, prematurely aging the youthful appearance of the face, and affecting the confidence we have in our smile.

At Truly Dental we provide a fully patient-focused experience to ensure that your smile is restored to its natural, fresh, healthy white using the safest and most effective Whitening treatment available. We utilise dentistry-standard solutions of whitening products which are only legally available in Ireland from a licenced and certified dental practice. Unlike commercial or over-the-counter whitening kits, which can at best bring about no change to your current tooth colour, and at worst can cause measurable damage to your enamel and gums, our custom-made Teeth Whitening trays - made just for you by our clinical team -  use a highly effective, proven method to reliably and safely whiten and restore your smile from the comfort of your own home.

What to Expect From Teeth Whitening

Initial consultation

Your dentist will carry out a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums, which can involve the taking of a dental X-ray if any present concerns or problems with your oral health are indicated, so that they can accurately and safely discuss if whitening is suitable for you. They will make a full assessment, taking into consideration your smile goals, needs, and preferences, to produce a detailed treatment plan. This includes an estimated time until completion, a full cost breakdown, and information if you would benefit from any other treatment in addition to whitening.

A thorough dental cleaning of your teeth will first be carried out to remove any plaque, calculus (plaque that has calcified into tartar) and superficial stains. A healthy and clean mouth will maximise your final results and overall benefit from teeth whitening. Your dentist will also be able to best advise you on the likely outcomes of your whitening treatment following this cleaning, as the lightest colour shades that can be achieved will vary from person to person.

Your dentist will then take a 3D impression of your teeth, so that this record can be sent to our dental lab where your custom-made whitening trays will be fabricated to your exact fit. Before you leave the clinic, our experienced front of house team will liaise with your dentist and schedule an appointment for you to return to the clinic when your custom-fit trays will be ready for collection.

Using your whitening kit

Approximately 1 week after your initial consultation, your whitening trays will be available at the clinic and your appointment confirmed. On collection, your dentist or hygienist will show you exactly how to use your whitening trays correctly and effectively – including how to properly insert and remove the trays, and how to apply the whitening gel.

Once satisfied that you can carry out the process consistently without supervision, you will be sent home with your custom whitening kit, as well as a detailed set of written instructions for you to refer to for the proper use of your trays, and on how to get the most from your whitening.

Our team will of course be happy to answer any questions you may have about your whitening kit or any part of the process during both your appointment and the full course of your treatment.

Questions? Answers

How long will it take before I see results from Teeth Whitening?

Treatment time when it comes to teeth whitening is highly variable, and will depend on your personal habits and individual needs. Generally speaking, if used correctly for at least 2 hours once per day each day, the majority of patients will achieve their desired results using custom-made whitening trays within 2 to 5 weeks.

Most people will require a top up treatment after 18 to 24 months, to renew and protect their bright, healthy smile, so it is a good idea to retain and keep your whitening trays safe after your initial phase of treatment.

Is Teeth Whitening safe?

Yes! Unlike with some over-the-counter or commercially available teeth whitening products, our dentists employ the active whitening agent used in dentist-regulated whitening treatment kits at the dose which achieves optimal effectiveness in balance with safety to the patient.

We will always ensure that you are fully educated on how to insert your whitening trays correctly and apply the gel in a responsible manner before you leave the clinic, so that you can achieve your desired results in the safest way possible.

Is there an age limit for Teeth Whitening?

We recommend the use of Teeth Whitening kits for patients over the age of 18. There is no upper age limit to using custom-made dentist-grade whitening trays, subject to a thorough regular dental check-up to ensure suitability in terms of overall teeth and gum health.

At Truly Dental we believe that every patient should be able to smile with confidence regardless of their age

Are my teeth suitable for Teeth Whitening?

At your initial consultation your dentist will examine your teeth and gums fully to ensure you are a suitable candidate for professional teeth whitening before commencing any treatment. If your examination reveals gum disease, tooth decay, or hypersensitivity, you may not be suitable for whitening at this time. While patients who are prone to milder sensitivity may be able to proceed with whitening under their dentist’s advisement, for other dental or periodontal conditions your dentist will recommend treating any underlying infections, decay, or disease currently affecting the immediate and long-term health of your teeth and gums before considering a whitening treatment.

Can I whiten my crowns or veneers?

Unfortunately no, your crowns and veneers will not be affected by tooth whitening.

If you are considering a tooth restoration with a dental crown or veneer it is often recommended to undergo a course of whitening treatment beforehand, so that your final tooth restoration can be fabricated to colour-match your natural teeth after they have reached the fresher, whiter shade.

If any of your teeth have been restored with a crown or veneer in the past, and these have become stained over time, your hygienist may be able to remove stains with a simple polish to these restored teeth during your routine cleaning visits.

Can I just use over-the-counter or commercial whitening kits?

Whitening products which are available to buy over-the-counter will not contain a high enough concentration of the active whitening ingredient to produce effective results. In Ireland dentists are the only professionals legally permitted and licenced to distribute effective teeth whitening kits, as they are fully knowledgeable in their safe use.

Your dentist will first undertake a full examination of your mouth to assess the overall health of your teeth and gums prior to any whitening treatment, as well as conduct a thorough cleaning and polishing of your teeth at this visit. Only then are impressions taken of your natural teeth, from which our dental lab fabricates custom-made whitening trays which are designed to fit snugly over your specific teeth. Some over-the-counter or commercial whitening products get into problems at this stage, as they involve you having to fit your own trays from a less-accurate ‘bite’ mould – these will often leak whitening gel into your mouth, diluting the gel’s effectiveness but also in some cases causing chemical burn damage to your gums.

Are there any side effects to professional Teeth Whitening?

The main side effect noted from Teeth Whitening treatment is occasional increased tooth sensitivity. While not everyone will experience this symptom, in most cases any sensitivity that does arise will ease by itself within 1 to 3 days after completing a whitening session. It will become less frequent the further along in your treatment course you are.

If you are prone to sensitive teeth or gums already, your dentist will recommend you use a desensitising toothpaste, such as Sensodyne, when brushing to alleviate any symptoms caused by sensitivity.

How can I maintain my new white smile?

During the initial course of treatment it is best to significantly reduce your consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, and heavily spiced meals, as these cause the most noticeable staining. For optimal results these substances should be kept to a minimum for at least 1 month following treatment. If you smoke, we also strongly recommend cutting back or quitting altogether if at all possible, as smoking is a huge contributor to darkening and yellowing teeth.

To ensure the greatest benefit, longevity, and value from your newly whitened smile, you should maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice per day and flossing daily, to reduce the build-up of plaque, calculus, and stains.

You should also commit to attending your dental hygienist regularly – a twice yearly scale and polish cleaning visit will remove any superficial staining and keep your smile looking fresh, healthy, and pearly white.

How much does Teeth Whitening cost?

At Truly Dental we offer a custom-made Teeth Whitening kit for €280. This includes the regulated, professional-grade chemical whitening agent and the specialised application trays we fabricate just for you.

Our whitening trays are custom-fit to securely cover your teeth, completely eliminating the risk of dilution of your whitening gel by saliva – unlike with some over-the-counter or commercial whitening products, which cannot prevent this kind of dilution, reducing their effectiveness and more importantly, causing damage to your gums.

Your dentist will always give you a detailed cost breakdown of your full treatment plan, including any additional treatment or procedure you have discussed at your initial consultation with us. Our team will be able to discuss with you all of the payment plan options we have available at Truly Dental to best suit your treatment needs, lifestyle, and budget. We offer one plan that allows you to pay for your total treatment monthly, with absolutely no down payment required and at 0% interest!
