In the time before your emergency appointment, some patients can find rinsing the mouth with warm, salty water to be soothing for radiating toothache, if easing the discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication is not providing relief. 

If you are experiencing severe dental damage, fracture or trauma, the discomfort of tooth or gum pain, or facial swelling, our specially trained and experienced emergency dental team will be able to resolve this issue for you during an urgent care appointment. 

However, we recommend urgent attendance at your nearest A&E department if you notice any of the following symptoms: 

• Dental trauma from an injury that is also accompanied by symptoms of severe head injury such as bleeding from the nose or ears, or cuts or lacerations to your tongue, cheek, or jaw
• Experiencing blackouts, loss of consciousness, double vision, or vomiting following an injury to the face
• Facial swelling that obstructs or may obstruct the airway, or in any way makes breathing difficult

In the event of your tooth being knocked out or loosened by dental trauma, damage or injury, it is essential to reimplant the tooth as soon as possible. Call us now and let us know what happened, and you will be booked in for an emergency consultation today. 

While you wait, try your best to locate the tooth, and gently replace it into the socket, being careful to hold the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root. For an adult tooth that has been knocked out in this way and then stored correctly, there is a chance for the tooth to be successfully replanted into the gum. Bite down on a cotton pad, using pressure to keep the pad and tooth in position. If you don’t feel comfortable reinserting the tooth at home, please place it into a container of milk (not regular tap water or bottled water) before calling our clinic, and we will arrange to see you as soon as possible. 

A dental crown or bridge becoming lost or loose can indeed be a dental emergency, however you will be relieved to hear, rarely an urgent one.
