I am a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) specialising in facial deformity / Orthognathic Surgery.

I am dual qualified in both Dentistry & Medicine from Trinity College in Dublin during which time I was the proud recipient of the prestigious Trinity College Academic Scholarship award during my undergraduate studies for achieving first class honours in all fields of Dentistry.

After Dental School and before reading Medicine I got exposure to all aspects of Dentistry in the Edinburgh Dental Institute before starting my career in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in St.Richard’s Hospital Chichester, UK.

I gained entry into the graduate Medical programme of Trinity College Dublin in 2010, during which time I maintained my links with OMFS and worked in various hospitals including St.James’s Hospital Dublin and Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, Belfast as a junior doctor in OMFS.

Upon graduation from Medical school, I was one of a select few to gain entry to the RCSI internship and core surgical training programme where I gained a wide exposure to General Medicine, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and General Surgery, before returning to St.James’s Hospital in a full time capacity as a Registrar in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Subsequent to my junior doctor years, starting the summer of 2016, I took time out of clinical practice to teach and lecture at the School of Medicine in Trinity College Dublin, Anatomy department whilst reading my higher Doctorate which was entitled:

'The nerve of facial expression, impact of its anatomical variations on iatrogenic surgical injury and a novel MRI diffusion weighted imaging technique to image its intra-parotid course '
During this higher research Doctorate, I studied the complex course of the facial nerve in the parotid glands of the face and applied advanced imaging techniques to track it’s course in 3D, the first time this technology was used for this purpose, with great success. This work has been published widely and presented at multiple international conferences. The results were so resounding I passed without the need to defend the thesis at Trinity College Dublin in 2019.Subsequent to my M.D, I completed my specialist training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery rotating between the prestigious Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead, Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and St.Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, during which time I gained vast amounts of experience in the management of all aspects Oral Surgery including the provision of implants, removal of simple to extremely complex teeth / wisdom teeth/ jaw cysts, jaw tumours, repair of fistulas and had the luxury of working along side ENT colleagues where we did joint procedures relating to the maxillary sinus and related pathologies affecting the mouth.

In addition to complex Oral Surgery, I gained huge amounts of experience in Oral / Maxillofacial Trauma from simple trauma to complex level 1 trauma cases which required joint operating with Neurosurgery where the skull fractures had involved the brain and cranialisation procedures were required.

I became the second surgeon during the latter parts of my training, in the field of Head and Neck Cancer where two surgeons are required for the complex procedures of Head and Neck cancer resections and reconstructions - often taking more than 12 hours to complete. We were regularly performing complex oral and facial resections, neck dissections and reconstructing the defects with free flaps from other pats of the body. My experience during my M.D. while dissecting the salivary glands of cadavers to explore the facial nerve served me well during this time as I became extremely proficient at excising tumours around the facial nerve using both traditional open procedures and more advanced minimally invasive surgeries and approaches.

The South East of England has a large elderly population and with it being a lot more sunny climax, I have been exposed to and performed hundreds of skin cancer surgeries with often complex reconstructions of the different zones of the face including recreating the nose / ears, lips, cheeks, scalp and neck. I have become a core member of the skin cancer Multi Disciplinary Team in the region, alongside Dermatolgists, Pathologists, Radiologists and Oncologists.

My sub specialist interest is Deformity / Orthognathic Surgery which encompasses any surgery to correct facial proportions and occlusion (bite).
This includes upper and lower jaw surgeries to correct jaw positions in relation to the skull in three dimensions in addition to genioplasty and rhinoplasty procedures should they be required. This surgery is often combined with orthodontics to get the best results.

Being the only specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon within the Truly Dental team I hope to bring my experience and expertise to an incredibly high quality and diligent team of clinicians who provide outstanding service and treatment.

Outside of work, I enjoy basketball, tennis, squash, cycling and traveling and have established a local group of at least 100 people to meet regularly and play Basketball in evenings and weekends. As a father with a young family, I love taking the opportunity at weekends and in school holidays to go camping and exploring the great outdoors!
