Your safety is our priority. Full stop.

General anaesthesia means you are completely asleep — fully unconscious, with no awareness, no sensation, and no
memory of the procedure. It is administered intravenously by your Consultant Anaesthetist, who calibrates the dosage
precisely to your weight, medical history, and the expected duration of treatment.

"You will feel nothing. You will remember nothing. You will simply close your eyes, and when
you open them, it will be over."

Who is General Anaesthesia for?

GA is suitable for a wide range of patients who need dental care but cannot
or prefer not to — receive it while awake.

Severely Anxious or Phobic Patients

If dental anxiety has kept you from the chair for years — or decades — you are not alone. GA means you can receive full dental care without a single moment of fear.

icon

Children & Special Needs

Young children or patients with conditions such as autism or complex behavioural needs often cannot safely receive dental treatment while conscious. GA removes all barriers.

icon

Complex Surgical Cases

Full arch implant surgery, multiple extractions, and extensive reconstruction — GA allows our surgeons to complete multi-hour procedures in a single session.

Patients Who Simply Prefer It

Some patients, regardless of procedure complexity, simply feel more comfortable being asleep. That is a perfectly valid choice, and we support it.

Questions? Answers

Is general anaesthesia safe?

Yes — when delivered by a qualified Consultant Medical Anaesthetist in a properly equipped facility. At Dame Street Dental Hospital, your anaesthetist is a hospital-trained consultant doctor. You are monitored throughout by both the anaesthetist and a dedicated medical anaesthesia nurse.

Will there always be a consultation before my general anaesthesia?

Yes — always, without exception. No patient proceeds to general anaesthesia without a formal pre-operative consultation. This is a clinical requirement and exists entirely for your safety and wellbeing.

Do I need to fast before my procedure?

Yes. You must not eat or drink for 6 hours before your procedure. Plain still water only is permitted up to 2 hours before. Failure to fast means your procedure will be postponed.

What if I have a complex medical history?

We regularly treat patients with controlled diabetes, hypertension, cardiac conditions, and more. Where necessary, we liaise directly with your GP or specialist to obtain clearance.

Will a Consultant Anaesthetist be present the entire time?

Yes — always. Your Consultant Anaesthetist does not step out, hand over to a junior, or manage multiple theatres simultaneously. One anaesthetist. One patient. Continuous presence.

Will someone need to accompany me?

Yes. You must be accompanied by a responsible adult who can take you home and remain with you for a minimum of 24 hours post-procedure.

How much does general anaesthesia cost?

The GA fee is €2,500 — a fixed, all-inclusive fee regardless of duration. You are entitled to claim €500 back through Revenue's 20% tax relief scheme.

Can I drive home after the procedure?

No. You should not drive for at least 24 hours after receiving general anaesthesia. A responsible adult must take you home and remain with you.
